WhatsApp introduces chat lock feature that keeps certain conversations hidden from others

The parent company of WhatsApp, Meta, unveiled a new feature on Monday that enables users to password-protect their chats.

With the help of this feature, WhatsApp users can now guarantee the privacy of their most sensitive chats and guard them from unwanted access by anyone who may be in possession of their mobile phones or other personal devices containing the chat data.

According to Meta, the chat lock function enables users to save a discussion within a secure file that can only be opened by their device’s passcode or biometric techniques like fingerprint identification.

Meta underlined its primary objective, which is to continue to look for new ways to safeguard message security and privacy.

“We’re introducing Chat Lock,” said Meta in their announcement of the new feature, “which lets you protect your most intimate chats with an extra layer of security.”

According to Meta, those who frequently share their phones with family members or run into situations when someone else temporarily gets access to their smartphone while they are conducting a private conversation would find this functionality useful.

Users can lock a chat by selecting the lock option while selecting the name of a person or group on WhatsApp, per the company’s instructions for using the new feature.

Users merely need to go to their WhatsApp inbox, enter their device passcode, or use biometrics like fingerprint identification to access encrypted messages. Meta has pledged to add more options for conversation locking in the upcoming months, like device-specific locks and the ability to create a special password exclusively for conversations.

Users will be able to use a different password for their discussions thanks to these improvements from the one they currently use to unlock their phones. Starting on Monday, the “Chat Lock” function will be available to all WhatsApp users worldwide.

Users only need to go to their WhatsApp inbox, input the device passcode, or use biometrics like fingerprint identification to access protected chats.

Looking ahead, Meta stated plans to provide more chat-locking options over the upcoming months, including the ability to lock down individual devices and set chat-specific passwords.

With these improvements, users will be able to use a different password for their conversations than they would for unlocking their phones. Starting on Monday, WhatsApp users can access the “Chat Lock” feature globally.
